A Unique Art Quilt

(and the perfect stashbuster)

There is no one pattern to make a seaglass quilt, and that's the beauty of them. Just like the pieces of found glass it's named for, shaped by time and water, each quilt tells a story.

I'll show you how to combine fabrics from your beloved scraps (and not so beloved ones as well) to make gorgeous art quilts.

There is no one pattern or template set. This class teaches the technique of how to make these quilt, and walks you through the entire process of design, layout, quilting, and finishing the quilt.

This class includes written lessons and videos. For the deaf or hard of hearing, all content in the videos is written in the text, with corresponding photos.

“Thank you so much for the class. This was my first time trying free motion quilting...and while the results are far from perfect or even good....it was a fairly forgiving project where this particular skill can be practiced on a smaller scale. I can't wait to make more as love the texture and variety of colors that can be incorporated. GREAT JOB!”

“I made three of these before watching the finishing lessons! Just completed everything and now I understand facing. Thanks for such great photos and videos and descriptions. I'm off to make more!”

Christi

“Wow! I am done! I am so thankful that you wrote such amazingly clear instructions with videos and pictures on how to make the sea glass quilt. This was definitely out of my comfort zone as I have only made 3 quilts and 2 table runners and have never done free motion quilting. Mostly, I have been a garment sewer. This process has been fun and I have learned so much from you. Thanks for these instructions. They gave me confidence to try to make something new like this beautiful sea glass quilt that I ❤️.”

Carol

“Really enjoyed this! I have a good friend who's favorite pass time is walking the beach and collecting sea glass. I now know what her Christmas gift will be this year!”

Virginia

“I've become a big fan of your works ever since I first saw your seaglass quilt on Instagram. I have NEVER done any quilting, sewing (not even a button myself!), or known how to use a sewing machine properly. Thank you so much for your inspiration! Now, I love machine quilting! You're amazing!”

FAQ

  • Is this using raw edge appliqué? Do the pieces fray?

My quilting technique means there is typically no fraying, but yes, it can happen. These art quilts are designed for display, so they will experience minimal handling and are far less likely to fray than a quilt that is frequently handled.

  • I've never made a quilt before - can I do this?

Absolutely! Many of my students have made a seaglass quilt as their first quilt ever. I walk through the entire process, including different ways to finish your quilt.

  • Can I make one to use as a blanket (not an art quilt)?

Yes, definitely! Once the pieces are secure, this quilt can be used however you wish. Bear in mind that washing will change the texture slightly.

  • I'm not comfortable free motion quilting. Will I still be able to make a quilt like this?

If you want your finished quilt to look like mine, you will need to use free motion quilting. I have included detailed lessons on free motion quilting in the class. I also include other quilting options (straight lines and organic straight lines) that require no free motion quilting at all. If you use these methods, I highly recommend using a walking foot.
